BRANCH SPINNERS
JOYFUL & EDUCATIONAL TOYS
IT’S LIKE MAGIC IN YOUR HANDS
IT IS PHYSICS IN ACTION- And it is FUN!
Observe the types of stresses at play while operating the Branch Spinner?
1.Tension
2. Compression
3. Torsion
Identify the work forces at play while operating the Branch Spinner. Why does the Branch body wobble? Make noise? Observe the gyroscopic effect when you turn your body while spinning.
Operating Instructions:
- Hold the handles in your fists. Don’t let go of the handles.
- Don’t operate over a table- Keep arms extended.
- Wind the line by rotating the Branch body several rotations.
- Pull and relax slightly on the handles and keep the line nearly horizontal as the Branch body spins.
- Increased pulling tension will accelerate the Branch body rotation- pulling too hard may break the twine.
- When stopping let the line sag until the Branch body stops, or carefully bring your fists together when the Branch body is stopped as it is reversing its spinning direction. That will keep the Spinner wound up for its next use, and you will avoid whacking your fingers.
Materials used:
- Air dried branch sections.
- Braided Dacron twine.
- Danish Wood Oil and/or paste wax.
